Happy Independence Day. Just a few thoughts:
“They were mostly men of means who had much to lose if the war was lost…and one-third served as militia officers during the war. Four of the signers were taken captive during the war and nearly all of them were poorer at the end of the war than at the beginning.”
These were truly great men who engaged in an unthinkably revolutionary effort to break free from their overlord (King George III). It wasn’t easy and it wasn’t clean but these are men who actually risked everything to “[bring] forth, upon this continent, a new nation, conceived in liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal.” (hat tip Abe Lincoln)
Compare those men and what they did to the cesspool we call our federal government today. These men are most certainly rolling over in their graves.
Today let’s celebrate not just our freedom but the foresight, fortitude, dedication, and bravery of the 56 men of the Second Continental Congress way back in 1776 who risked everything so we could be here today. They deserve our respect and gratitude.
